Home to the 6th-century Bagnath Temple, located at the sacred confluence of the Gomti and Saryu rivers, Katyuri and Sama valleys stands on land steeped in mythology and legacy. Once part of the thriving kingdom of the Katyuri Kings—the first major rulers of Kumaon—this region holds spiritual and historical depth beyond compare.
The Katyuris, believed to descend from Kunind tribes or Katyayan Brahmins, ruled from the 7th to 11th century CE, with Kartikeyapur (now Baijnath) near Bageshwar as their capital. Under their reign, Bageshwar flourished as a religious and administrative centre. The very name ‘Bhageshwar’ derives from Bhagwan Shiva (Bhageshwar Mahadev), to whom the Bagnath Temple is dedicated.
Their devotion lives on in stone-carved temples, sacred shrines, and the spiritual energy that still envelops this Himalayan valley.
Nestled amid towering peaks and whispering rivers, Kasha Valley offers a retreat once part of ancient trade routes to Tibet and western India. It was more than just a kingdom—it was a crossroads of culture and commerce.

The fall of the Katyuri dynasty in the 11th century, due to internal strife and external invasions, fragmented their territory into smaller principalities like Chand and Parmar. Yet, their spiritual and cultural legacy endures.
